Medtronic has announced a new partnership with Cornerstone Robotics Ltd. that includes a $700 million investment. As part of the agreement, Medtronic also secured rights to distribute Cornerstone Robotics’ Sentire surgical system in select markets outside the United States where the platform has already been approved.
The company said it will offer Sentire alongside its own Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system. In Medtronic’s view, the two-platform approach is intended to widen access to robotic-assisted surgery while giving surgeons and healthcare providers more flexibility across different market and clinical requirements.
The partnership is framed as the basis for a multi-port portfolio built around Hugo and extended by Sentire. Cornerstone Robotics, which is based in Hong Kong, said the system was developed entirely in-house. The company describes Sentire as combining its architecture with an immersive console and dual-console capability, aiming to fit different surgeon preferences and clinical needs.
On the regulatory and clinical side, the published material states that Sentire has completed multi-specialty clinical trials and has market approval in China, the European Union and Singapore. It also states that the platform received CE Mark in May 2026 for minimally invasive general, gynecologic, thoracic and urologic procedures.
The announcement adds to Medtronic’s broader push in minimally invasive surgery. The company said surgeons are using Hugo in more than 35 countries across six continents, including the U.S., where it received FDA clearance within the last year. Medtronic also said procedure growth for Hugo is running at more than twice the growth rate of the robotic surgery market, and that total procedures are expected to exceed 50,000 globally by the end of its fiscal year.
Medtronic added that it plans further development of Hugo through software upgrades, real-time AI across its digital ecosystem, integrated stapling, expanded instrumentation and additional clinical indications. The company describes Hugo as a modular, multi-quadrant platform for a broad range of soft-tissue procedures, combining wristed instruments, 3D visualization and Touch Surgery capabilities with dedicated support for robotics program optimization, service and training.
