A retrospective published by Modern Machine Shop reads IMTS as a show that has gradually changed its priorities over roughly the past decade. Instead of centering mainly on the machine that removes metal, the floor is increasingly organized around the intelligence, digital systems and automation that direct production. The article bases that conclusion on archived coverage across multiple show cycles rather than on a single year’s impressions.
In the publication’s reading of IMTS 2014, machine tools were still the main attraction. Additive manufacturing appeared as an emerging concept rather than a core production theme, and both automation and data-driven manufacturing were described more as future requirements than as widespread realities on the floor. The South Building, associated with machining centers, lathes and chip-making equipment, remained the symbolic center of the event.
The turning point identified for 2018 is digitalization. Modern Machine Shop says that this was the cycle when data connection, collection, monitoring and system management moved to the front of the discussion. Software, standards and connectivity organizations gained visibility alongside traditional manufacturing suppliers, while automation also rose in importance as more plug-and-play offerings lowered adoption barriers.
By 2022, the article argues, automation had expanded well beyond the machine tool enclosure. It was no longer just about robots beside machining centers, but about support for unattended or human-light production across tooling, workholding and inspection as well. The publication links that shift to a persistent labor constraint, describing workforce scarcity as a durable assumption shaping manufacturing system design.
The 2024 edition added a clearer sustainability dimension, with coverage that touched on cleaning chemistry, energy use and waste reduction. In parallel, additive manufacturing was portrayed less as a novelty and more as an established production segment with its own economic logic, suggesting that it had moved from demonstration status to a more mature role in the manufacturing mix.
For IMTS 2026, the strongest new signal is artificial intelligence. The show is set to feature a dedicated Industrial AI Arena and a one-day Industrial AI Conference developed with Dr. Jay Lee and the University of Maryland Center for Industrial AI. According to the organizers, the arena will focus on applications such as quality and inspection, process optimization, downtime reduction, cybersecurity, ergonomics, safety and demand forecasting. The presence of Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft in the Automation Sector further underlines the broader shift: the show floor is increasingly about the intelligence layer above the machine, not only the machine itself.
